Our pioneering and award-winning family farm

Over 30 years since helping to pioneer free-range egg production in the UK, we constantly seek new and innovative ways to provide the best quality eggs while ensuring the best husbandry of our flocks.

Geldard Farm Eggs is run by the Geldard family.

John, Rachel and their sons Richard and Charles, their wives Helen and Clare, with their children, are all actively involved in the farming business.

We are a family business, long-established with a reputation for being at the forefront of British egg production. Indeed, the 2019 British Farming Awards recognised John Geldard’s contribution to British agriculture - a proud achievement for us all.

We have developed a reputation for understanding what customers want and supplying high-quality eggs with first-class customer service.

We are pioneers of free-range egg production on our farm operation, along with a group of dedicated farmers producing eggs for our business. We specialise in local and regional egg production and supply, with all our eggs packed on our farm.

In 2020, we opened a custom-designed and built egg packing and distribution centre to help support the growth in demand for our quality-assured eggs. The packing centre designed by Richard Geldard and built by local builders, uses a simple but very affective lay out to efficiently handle eggs though smooth product flow and incorporates the latest developments in equipment technology in a packing line to help our team deliver the best quality eggs to our customers.

Where it began

With a rich history in the area, our family first started farming at Low Plumgarths near Kendal until a roundabout, built in the 1960s, split the land and prompted John and Rachel to start there farming careers as tenant farmers at High Wray Farm on the shores of lake Windermere, owned by the national trust the farm had previously belonged Beatrix Potter’s husband Willum Healius. Then fifteen years later, the family moved to our current location Low Foulshaw Farm, near Levens and Kendal in south Cumbria, where we’ve been for over 30 years.

We built the farm steading up from scratch and now run mixed farming business running across 530 acres, with 1,000 breeding sheep and a herd of 150 beef breeding cows

alongside our laying hen flocks. Over the years we have gained a strong reputation for our high-quality husbandry, as most of our cattle and sheep are reared for breeding.

The family business today employs 25 staff, who are dedicated to producing packing and distributing our products to more than 200 retail and foodservice outlets across the UK, we are proud of our farming, our animals and our food.

Solar-powered egg production

Over the years, we have invested in the sustainability of our farm, including environmentally-friendly solar power that provides a large percentage of our energy needs.

We farm our land making best use of all environmental initiatives including tree planting, hedgerow restoration and protection along with creating wildlife corridors. We are fully committed to continually advancing our environmental initiatives and we are strong believers that local food for local people can deliver long term environmental sustainability.

Our Egg Packing and Distribution centre opens

A new, purpose-designed and built Egg Packing Centre opened at the end of 2019. Located just off the A591 at Foulshaw with easy access to transport links in and out of Cumbria, our centre offers direct access to the M6 so we can deliver our eggs rapidly throughout the North West.

The centre has significantly more capacity for packing and shipping to meet the growing demand for high-quality eggs. It houses the very latest in egg packing technology, including stringent bio-security processes and effective quality control.

We designed the centre to future-proof our ability to supply, and sited it near but remote from our egg production, enabling an uninterrupted egg supply to our customers.
