Award-Winning Farmers

Head of the Geldard family, John Geldard’s hard work and enterprising career were recognised in the 2019 British Farming Awards when he was awarded the prestigious Winner Outstanding Contribution to British Agriculture.

More than 40 years ago, he began his career after securing a tenancy with his wife Rachel on a Lake District National Trust tenanted hill farm. They went on to grow a mixed farming business at Levens near Kendal, Cumbria – built from the ground up.

Over the past 28 years, the family has transformed Low Foulshaw Farm, running across 530 acres comprising 1,000-sheep and a herd of 150 Stabiliser cows.

On receiving the award, John said, “I feel exceptionally honoured to have won this tremendous accolade after having the privilege of being involved in the agricultural industry for some 45 years. But without the support of my family behind me, I would not have been able to get out and participate in the activities I have, which is why I am so grateful for their continued support. Awards like this are fantastic and crucial in recognising the hard work that goes in behind the scenes. Agriculture has a bright future, and the next generation has a lot to look forward to”.
